Mandela House and Visitor Centre Soweto, Johannesburg
The Mandela house, no. 8115 Vilikazi Street, Soweto, was home
to Nelson Mandela and his first wife Evelyn Ntoko Mase from 1946-1956
and later, after he divorced Evelyn, to his second wife Winnie
Madikizela from 1957-1962.
The original brick
building has been converted into a museum, providing the backdrop
for the narrative of the life story of this international figure.
The house has been
restored to the original ‘Type C2’ housing type,
typical to the area, while maintaining the fire damage and bullet
holes. Red facebrick has been used on new walls and paving to
match the red brick of the house.
Detached from the
original house, a new compact visitor centre has been added
into the site.
